Shadowlands is a 1985 television film, written by William Nicholson, directed by Norman Stone and produced by David M Thompson for BBC Wales about Oxford don and children's book author, C. S. Lewis; it has subsequently been adapted by Nicholson as a stage play and then as a cinema film. The film began life as a script entitled I Call it Joy written for Thames Television by Brian Sibley and Norman Stone. Sibley was credited on the the BBC film as 'consultant' and went on to write the book, Shadowlands: The True Story of C. S. Lewis and Joy Davidman.
대학 3학년 때 도서관에 루이스의 대부분의 저서들이 소장되어 있다는 사실에 놀라며 즐거워했던 기억이 있다. 비록 영문학사에서 20세기 작가들의 이름이 짤막하게 열거된 리스트에 이름만 언급되어 있지만 그처럼 멋진 인생을 살았던 영문학자도 드물 것이다. '나르니아연대기'는 영화가 원작에 못미치는 감이 있지만 'Shadowlands'는 루이스의 자전적 영화로 손색이 없어 보인다.
